Metering
Smart Meters
Electric Kiwi requires our customers to have smart meters enabling accurate tracking of usage. Meters record the actual amount of electricity used every half hour, and the data is sent to us once per day. This usage data is available to you through our website and mobile app.
If we are unable to supply due to your meter type
Unfortunately, if you don’t have a smart meter we will not be able to supply your address. Our systems require smart meter data to deliver the Electric Kiwi experience, such as the Hour of Power.
If you have been declined due to metering, we would suggest that you go to Powerswitch where you can find a list of available prices for your address.
We have a list of support agencies available should you need them.
How to Check Your Smart Electricity Meter
The display on your smart meter automatically updates every eight seconds. If you want the screen to stay on one reading, simply press the ‘SELECT’ button.
Your current meter reading will then show up on the display.
Please note: If you turn off your main electricity switch, we won’t be able to access your smart meter readings remotely. In this case, we may have to use estimated readings until your power is restored.
Controlled and Uncontrolled Metering
A controlled meter enables your electricity retailer and local network provider to regulate your power usage during times of high demand, helping you access lower energy rates as a result.

The specific duration your supply may be switched off depends on your location, the type of controlled option you have, and how you typically use electricity. The goal is to manage any interruptions so they have minimal effect on your appliances. Generally, longer interruptions can last between 4-6 consecutive hours, though they may be longer in rare cases. Controlled meters are often used for devices such as hot water cylinders, water pumps, or underfloor heating.
If your home has a controlled meter, it also includes a second, “uncontrolled” or “24-hour” meter. This gives you the flexibility to use electricity whenever you want, but at a higher price compared to the controlled meter. These meters typically supply power to household appliances, wall sockets, and lighting.
