3G’s on its way out — here’s the lowdown
Electric Kiwi is hooked up to the reliable 2Degrees network, which has coverage in 98.5% of the places Kiwis are based.
2Degrees, along with other providers in NZ, will be shutting down 3G services toward the end of 2025.

What settings should I check?
If you've checked that your device is supported, and is all up to date - you can check if VoLTE is switched on in your settings.
iPhone:
For iPhone: Go to Settings > Mobile > Mobile Data Options > Voice and Data. Ensure that 5G or 4G is ticked (depending on phone capability) and that the VoLTE toggle is enabled.
For iPhone using dual SIM (e.g., eSIM and physical SIM): Go to Settings > Mobile > select the SIM you are using for voice calls (e.g., Primary) > Voice and Data. Ensure that 5G or 4G is ticked (depending on phone capability) and that the VoLTE toggle is enabled.
Android:
For Samsung: Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile networks, ensure the network mode is set to 5G or 4G auto connect (depending on phone capability) and that VoLTE calls are enabled.
For other Android devices: Go to Settings > Mobile networks > select SIM, ensure the network mode is set to 5G or 4G auto connect (depending on phone capability) and that VoLTE calls are enabled.
If the VoLTE option is not available when you check your network settings, your device likely does not support VoLTE.
My phone isn't going to work when 3G is retired, what should I do?

What is 3G
In New Zealand, we’ve got three main mobile networks: 2degrees, Spark, and One NZ (Electric Kiwi leverages the 2degrees network). They all use tech called Radio Access Network to keep us connected. Over the years, this tech keeps getting better, which is where you hear about the different generations or 'G’s like 3G, 4G, and 5G. Right now, their networks use a mix of these and most new phones support all three. As the newer, faster networks roll out, the old ones like 2G and 3G get switched off to make room for better service.
Why is the 3G network shutting down?
The 3G network is being retired so that newer 4G and 5G mobile technologies can expand and improve across New Zealand. 3G-only phones have become far less popular, and most providers stopped selling them at least couple of years ago—or even longer.
When will the 3G network be switched off?
We leverage the 2degrees network, 2degrees (along with other networks) plans to switch off its 3G network towards the end of 2025. We’ll make sure you have all the information you need and support you if you have any questions.
What if my area only has 3G? Will I still have coverage?
A very small number of locations are currently 3G-only. 2degrees is working hard to upgrade coverage in those areas so that all customers can connect with 4G before the 3G network closes. You can check the latest coverage on this page here.
What happens if I don’t upgrade to a VoLTE device?
Unfortunately any devices that don't support VoLTE You’ll need to upgrade to a VoLTE capable device if you want to stay connected after the 3G shutdown.
Can I use 3G overseas?
Some countries, like the USA and Australia, are also shutting down their 3G networks. In Australia, all 3G networks will be off as of 28 October 2024. If your phone isn’t up-to-date, you might not be able to use voice services while roaming. To avoid any hassles, make sure your phone supports VoLTE roaming before you go.
