How do I switch power companies?

Switching power companies might sound like a mission, but it’s actually quick, simple, and free. In New Zealand, you can change electricity providers whenever you like and the process is designed to be painless.

Here’s how it works:

Check your current plan.

Have a look at your latest bill or contract. Are you on a fixed term with exit fees? Or are you on an open-term deal like Electric Kiwi customers? If you’re free of contracts, you’re good to move anytime. Knowing your current usage and charges also helps when comparing plans.

Shop around.

Comparison websites are handy, or you can go straight to provider sites to see rates and offers. Look at more than just the headline price: check unit rates, daily charges, and any extras. For example, if you’re using a lot of power at night, a plan with cheaper night rates could be the best fit. If you value flexibility, look for no contracts and no exit fees. (That’s how we do it at Electric Kiwi.)

Sign up with your new provider.

Once you’ve picked your new retailer, signing up is usually just an online form (ours is here). You’ll need to give your address, maybe your ICP number (it’s on your bill), and some personal details. The best part? You don’t need to call your old company to cancel, as your new provider sorts it all out for you.

Let the switch happen (no power cuts).

There’s no interruption to your power. The same lines bring electricity to your house so only the billing changes. Most switches take a few days, sometimes a week or two if a final meter read is needed. With smart meters, it’s often faster. Your new provider will tell you when they’ve officially taken over.

Get your final bill.

Your old company will send you a last bill for any usage up to your switch date (or refund you if you’re in credit). After that, you’re done – bills will come from your new provider.

At Electric Kiwi, switching is especially easy.

You can sign up online in just a few minutes, and we’ll handle the rest. No sign-up fees, no fixed-term contracts, and no exit charges. We reckon you’ll want to stick around once you see the savings, but if not, you’re free to go anytime.

Bottom line: Switching power companies is one of the fastest ways to save if you find a better deal. It’s free, simple, and totally in your control.
