When we kicked off in December 2014 we thought that electricity options were unnecessarily complex. Multiple discounts, joining specials and one-off deals made power prices hard to understand.
Smart meters were being rolled out across the country, but few providers had taken up the challenge to do anything smart with them!
The Hour of Power is a way to use smart meter data for good. Customers can save by shifting power use to low-peak times. It’s great for the country as well, as the less power used during those peak times, the less demand on the national electricity infrastructure and hopefully less carbons too!
We built our own online systems and our smart tech helps us to be super-efficient. We took all aspects of our business online, and then began creating ways for customers to benefit.

Electric Kiwi was founded by a small team of young entrepreneurs who saw an opportunity to combine their expertise in information technology and the electricity market. With backing from smart global investors, we plan to keep the big power retailers on their toes by innovating and driving competition in the market. Electric Kiwi took on its first customers in December 2014. We aim to operate to the highest standards – and are measured by outside parties to ensure we deliver on that promise. We are now NZ’s fastest growing electricity retailer (as at July 2018) and we have won a few accolades for our service.
In 2020 we were awarded a Consumer People's Choice Award, and the Canstar Blue Most Satisfied Customers Award - Electricity.
In 2018 Electric Kiwi was awarded a People’s Choice Award from Consumer NZ. Along with that we won the 2018 Consumer NZ Energy Retailer of the Year at the Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards. In 2018 we were also awarded the Deloitte Fast 50 award for the fastest growing NZ business. Quite a year!
In 2017, Canstar Blue awarded Electric Kiwi the Most Satisfied Customers Award – Electricity Providers.
The Electricity Authority of New Zealand has audited and certified Electric Kiwi as a reconciliation participant in the retail electricity market. This means we meet all regulatory and legal requirements to participate.
Electric Kiwi is a member of the Utilities Disputes scheme.
